With its 40,000 students, 4,000 members of staff and a range of courses covering almost every sector, Fontys University of Applied Sciences is one of the largest institutions for higher education in the Netherlands. The 31 schools teach approximately 100 bachelor courses in the variants full-time, part-time, sandwich and in-service. In addition, 31 master variants are available, as well as 10 Associate degrees. Of these, 17 courses are offered in English. Of the total of 57 minors, 16 are taught in English and 1 in German. The number of registered students of non-Dutch nationality rose in 2010 to 5,088, in addition to 169 registered incoming exchange students.

Legal and internal organisation structure

Fontys is a foundation where the organisation structure is based around the processes:

Administration: the Executive Board represents the competent authority and acts as the unit responsible for results, answering to the Board of Governors.
Primary: each for their own market segment, the schools undertake the core activities (education, research and contract activities) on behalf of Fontys.
Support: the eight services provide support activities for education, research and contract activities.

Supervision and management of the Fontys University of Applied Sciences are the responsibility of the Board of Governors and the Executive Board. Both the Executive Board and the schools make use of eight Fontys Services

Educational vision

Fontys University of Applied Sciences is a learning community that has focused its strategy on quality. Fontys invests in intensive, challenging, fascinating and well-organised education. The competence-based education offered at Fontys is built around the three core competences knowledge, skills and professional attitude. In this way, students are thoroughly prepared for professional practice or self-employment. Fontys has set itself the task of contributing to the development and education of talent, encouraging personal performance and developing an awareness of values among students.

Despite the large student numbers, education at Fontys is organised on a small scale. Fontys also focuses particular attention on the parameters necessary for ensuring the smooth process of study, such as study career supervision, coaching and a buddy system, education and examination timetables, feedback on assessments and assignments, study progress registration, information provision and the accessibility of teaching staff.

Fontys focuses on bachelor education and master courses financed by government. The education offered is well organised in a professional education environment. Fontys strives to achieve high quality, embedded solidly in society, while achieving a leading position as a knowledge institution, both nationally and in its regional environment.

Governance and (horizontal) accountability

Fontys University of Applied Sciences, as a social institution, aims in an open and transparent manner to account for its activities to its immediate environment. Fontys wishes to be judged according to its performance, and to communicate openly with its stakeholders. The governors and Executive Board of Fontys are organised in accordance with the principles laid down in the Sector Code for the Governance of Universities of Applied Sciences. The Board of Governors ensures correct compliance with these principles by the Executive Board

As well as vertical accountability to various bodies including the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Fontys operates a range of forms of horizontal dialogue and accountability. This includes accountability to students and employees for example via participation bodies and course committees (OCs). The field of work is involved in course committees and the work field and professional field committees to ensure that the quality of education is carefully monitored. Many schools also have an Advisory Board.

Representation

Every Fontys school has a School Participation Council (IMR). The discussion partner for the IMR members is their own school director. The Central Participation Council (CMR) is the discussion partner for the Executive Board, while the discussion partner for the Service Participation Council (DMR) is the director of a support service.

A small-scale approach

Despite the fact that Fontys is one of the largest higher educational institutions in the south of The Netherlands, its teaching is conducted in small-scale environments at the various Fontys locations. As a result, a great deal of attention is given to your personal development and at the same time, you can profit from the huge diversity offered by Fontys as a whole.

Practical orientation

At Fontys, teaching is geared towards developments in society and in the labour market. The course programmes are highly practically orientated. In the English-language programmes, use is made of a variety of didactic techniques. Of course, students are supervised, counselled and trained by excellent teaching staff to help them to ultimately become all-round professionals. During your course programme, you will complete an internship and a graduation term, in which you must prove that you can adequately analyse, tackle and solve problems.

Student-centred education at Fontys

As a Fontys student, you may design your own study path, i.e. you may determine your own route through the range of course programmes available, formulate your own learning requirements and reflect critically on your own strengths and weaknesses.

Majors & Minors

Bachelor degree programmes at Fontys are broken down into a Major and at least one Minor. The Major offers broad-based education for your future profession, whilst one or more Minors will provide you with the opportunity to focus on specific subject areas, whereby you can broaden your career prospects, or decide to focus on your area of specialisation. In principle, you can select from the entire range of Minor subjects on offer at Fontys, or you may decide to select a Minor to be conducted at one of the Fontys partner universities within, or outside The Netherlands.

International orientation

As a student entering an English-language degree programme, you will interact with individuals of other nationalities, thereby starting to build your international network at an early stage in your student life. Working in multicultural teams is an experience in itself.

Admission requirements

Diplomas

To be eligible as a prospective Bachelor degree programme student, you must have been awarded a diploma of higher secondary education that is equivalent to Dutch standards. If you have not yet received your secondary school diploma please fill out the diploma information form and submit this so we can proceed with the enrolment procedure. To be eligible as a prospective Master degree programme student, you must have been awarded a relevant Bachelor’s degree that is equivalent to Dutch standards. English proficiency

For all course programmes conducted in the English language, a minimum level of proficiency in the English language is required, as detailed in the table below. You must substantiate your level of English-language proficiency by submitting evidence in the form of a language test result pertaining to one of the below-mentioned courses.

Fontys offers preparatory courses to prospective students who meet all of the prerequisites for enrolment on a degree course programme, but whose command of English does not meet the required minimum standard of IELTS 6.0. Some applicants may be exempted from submitting language proficiency test results, as follows:

Applicants with Dutch HAVO (Senior General Secondary Education) and/orVWO (University Preparatory Education) diplomas.
EEA / EU applicants with the required previous educational qualifications.
Applicants whose previous education was conducted in the English language and was followed in a country in which English is an official language.
Applicants whose mother tongue is English.
Exchange students.
Applicants to the fields of music, theatre, dance, visual arts and circus & performance arts, whereby other criteria may apply.

An applicant’s level of proficiency in the English language must always meet the entry requirements for the chosen Fontys course programme. Fontys reserves the right to require language proficiency testing for all categories of applicants.

Non-EEA students 2012 – 2013

Non-EU/EEA students who enrol for the first time in the 2012 – 2013 Academic Year as Bachelor degree programme students at the Fontys University of Applied Sciences will be obliged to pay tuition fees of EUR 5,500.

Students enrolled in degree programmes in Expression – Music – Design will be obliged to pay tuition fees of EUR 9,000.

Exceptions are as follows:

· For students enrolled in non-state-funded course programmes, other tuition fees apply. Please refer to the relevant Course Department.

· Students who are eligible for Dutch ‘studiefinanciering’ (student grants and loans) are also eligible to pay tuition fees of EUR 1,771 as required by Dutch law. This must be requested by the students in question and specific documentation will be required.

Please note that expenses relating to books and readers are not included in the tuition fees.

Accreditation

At Fontys, we attach great importance to the quality of the education that we provide. All Fontys degree programmes are accredited by the Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie, or ‘NVAO’ (the Dutch/Flemish Accreditation Organisation), or by equivalent British accreditation bodies. The quality of the degrees awarded by Fontys is guaranteed.

Code of conduct

It is important that Fontys provides prospective students with transparent, realistic and honest information. We have therefore signed the ‘Code of Conduct with respect to international students in Dutch higher education’. This code details the standards to be followed by Dutch higher education institutions in their dealings with international students. Fontys offers international students a guarantee of the quality of its programmes, student recruitment, selection and counselling procedures. Fontys international Diploma Supplement

All students graduating from Fontys are issued with a Diploma Supplement, which provides an English-language description of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies that were followed and successfully completed. The format of this document was developed by the European Commission, the Council of Europe and UNESCO/CEPES. Your Diploma Supplement will enable prospective employers throughout Europe (and the world) to understand the nature of your Fontys qualifications.

Fontys campuses

Our international course programmes are conducted at our campuses located in Eindhoven, Tilburg and Venlo. All campuses are equipped with computer rooms, libraries and student restaurants. Wireless Internet is available throughout the campuses, enabling you to bring your laptop to Fontys and to work, study, search for information and check your e-mail wherever you happen to be at Fontys.

Eindhoven

The Eindhoven Campus is formed by a collection of buildings located throughout Eindhoven, most of which are within walking distance of the central railway station.

Both Fontys and the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (Eindhoven Technical University) attract many students to Eindhoven. Tilburg

The Tilburg Campus is located on the outskirts of Tilburg and is serviced by good bus connections and safe cycling routes. The Arts cluster is situated in the centre of the city.

Fontys and the Universiteit van Tilburg, or ‘UvT’ (Tilburg University) attract many students to Tilburg, with more than 25,000 students gracing its streets every day.

Venlo

The Venlo Campus buildings are located at the Tegelseweg 255, in building numbersW1 and W3.

Fontys in Venlo is situated on the campus-like estate, ‘De Wylderbeek’, located near the banks of the Meuse River. Currently, approximately 2,000 students study in Venlo.

Studying in the Netherlands

Fontys international student association

As a newcomer to a student city, it will be important that you feel at home in your new environment as quickly as possible and one way of doing so will be to make some new friends. By joining a student association, you will have the opportunity to meet many new people. Almost all Course Departments have their own student associations.

FISA Eindhoven

The Fontys International Student Association, or ‘FISA’, based in Eindhoven, was established in 2005. It is an association where all Fontys international students can get together. FISA works closely with both the Fontys International Office and the Fontys Student Centre, to ensure that the welfare and rights of international students at Fontys are maintained. ESN Tilburg

Like other local sectors, the Erasmus Student Network, or ‘ESN’, based in Tilburg, aims to ensure that international exchange students in Tilburg feel at home, have a great time, meet many new people and gain a good general, overview of Dutch student life and Dutch culture. To this end, the ESN Tilburg offers a mentoring programme, which links a group of 7 – 9 international students with 2 – 3 Dutch mentors, who help them with any practical problems and show them around Tilburg. In addition, the mentors arrange activities, excursions, special weekends and parties for international exchange students. The Hub Venlo

The hub is a place where students can study, play games, hang out with friends, and grab a cold drink. Student parties are also organised at this society. About the Netherlands

You may already be aware of the ‘Unique Selling Points’ of The Netherlands, such as tulips, windmills, clogs and of course, the country’s low altitude and vulnerability to flooding.

The Netherlands covers around 41,000 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 16 million. With a rich cultural heritage, the country has been home to many of history’s most famous names in the areas of art, literature, philosophy and science. It also has a long history of international trade, having forged links with countries around the world from as early as 1600, bringing together new knowledge, skills, business and ideas. The warm welcome we give to the rest of the world has earned us a well-deserved reputation for openness in all aspects of society.

Should you call it Holland, or The Netherlands? The country’s formal name is ‘Nederland’ (The Netherlands), meaning the ‘low country’, or the ‘lowlands’, as much of the land is at or below sea level. In fact, ‘Holland’ is the name of the western-most area of the country that is the most heavily populated of all the provinces, encompassing the provinces of North and South Holland and the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. ‘Holland’ is also commonly (and mistakenly) used to refer to The Netherlands as a whole, including all of the twelve provinces that make up the entire country.

As is the rest of Europe, the south of The Netherlands is within easy reach by car, or by utilising the country’s excellent public transport system. Our multinational population presents a rich mix of different cultures, each characterised by the tolerance for which the Dutch are famous. When you study in the south of the country, you will quickly learn that we have so much more to offer than just windmills, tulips, cheese and clogs. Although, of course, you should also take the time to explore these aspects of the country!

Education in the Netherlands

The Dutch approach

Universities in The Netherlands offer more than 1,150 international course programmes conducted in the English language. As such, our country is the largest supplier of English-language course programmes in continental Europe. The Netherlands has received international acclaim for the groundbreaking Problem-Based Learning, or ‘PBL’ system, that teaches students to analyse and solve real problems independently, through a mix of theory and application, teamwork and self-study and through challenging the self-discipline of the students.

Dutch universities

Higher education in The Netherlands is offered at approximately 55 universities. In addition to arts schools and teacher training colleges, two major types of universities can be distinguished, i.e. universiteiten (research universities) and hogescholen(universities of applied sciences). The research universities train students for the independent practice of science and academic research, whereas the universities of applied sciences focus more on the application of knowledge and the direct preparation of their students for professional careers. At the Fontys University of Applied Sciences, we place the emphasis on competency-based education and we are proud to be one of the Dutch hogescholen.

Universities of applied sciences

Universities of applied sciences offer four-year course programmes, leading to aBachelor’s degree upon completion of the undergraduate phase and a Master’s degree upon completion of the postgraduate phase. The course programmes are designed to target specific domains within the labour market and always include internship or work placement periods. In The Netherlands, there are about 40 universities of applied sciences and Fontys is one of the largest and best known.

Visa information

Depending on your native country an Entry Visa (MVV) might be required to enter the Netherlands. Additional you will need a Residence Permit if the period of stay in the Netherlands will take more than 3 months.

Fontys University of Applied Sciences has an agreement with the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) to apply for Entry Visa and Residence Permits on behalf of students. This procedure will be started before you travel to the Netherlands. Students are not allowed to apply for it themselves.

Entry Visa / MVV

Sticker in your passport issued by Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country.

All non-EU/EEA students entering The Netherlands , except nationals from Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, the USA and Vatican City State, will need an Entry Visa (MVV).

Residence Permit / VVR

Card will be issued in the Netherlands.

Those who enter The Netherlands with or without an Entry Visa (MVV) and wish to stay longer than three months, are required to apply for a Residence Permit(VVR).The Fontys International Office will send the application to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service on your behalf. The residence permit will be ready in the first week after your arrival in the Netherlands.

The application procedure

After you have received a letter of acceptance (by mail or e-mail) from the Fontys institute of your choice, you will receive an e-mail through the VisaCare+ system regarding the application of your Entry Visa and/or Residence Permit. Details of documents required will be explained.
You will need to arrange payment specified in the payment letter attached.
You will also need to prove you have access to the amount of € 815 / month to provide your living expenses.
In addition, Chinese students have to apply for a Nuffic certificate .
As soon as Fontys has received (and approved) all required documents and the receipt of the payment has been confirmed by the financial department, Fontys International Office will submit your application to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service on your behalf.

Please note: Pakistan students will be asked to motivate their wish to study in the Netherlands during an interview at the Dutch Embassy in Islamabad.

Non EEA students

Provided that you need an entry visa a/o residence permit the insurance is part of the immigration procedure. Fontys will arrange it for you. The visa process provides further information so please ignore the insurance form
