The UK Government has announced a new set of changes to the Immigration Rules through Statement of Changes HC 584, published on 3 September 2026.
The latest update introduces changes across several immigration routes, including the Student Route, Visitor Route, Skilled Worker route, EU Settlement Scheme and provisions supporting the UK’s participation in the Erasmus+ programme.
For international students planning to study in the UK, one of the most important changes is an upcoming increase in the financial maintenance requirement for Student visa applicants.
The UK Government has announced an annual increase to the financial maintenance requirement for students applying under the Student Route.
From 30 November 2026, the required funds will increase in line with the maintenance support available to UK home students for the 2026/27 academic year.
Under the updated rules:
The requirement can generally be calculated for up to 9 months of study, meaning students should plan their financial evidence carefully before submitting a Student visa application.
The maximum accommodation payment that can be offset against the maintenance requirement has also been updated.
Important: The new maintenance amounts take effect from 30 November 2026. Applicants should therefore check which financial requirement applies based on the date of their application.
Another significant development is the UK’s preparation for its association with the Erasmus+ programme from 2027.
The UK and European Union reached an agreement for the UK to associate with Erasmus+ in 2027, and the new Immigration Rules introduce provisions to facilitate eligible Erasmus+ participants travelling to and studying or training in the UK.
Under the updated rules, eligible Erasmus+ participants may be able to undertake activities including:
Certain Erasmus+ participants will also be able to access the Student Route where their programme would otherwise fall outside existing Student Route requirements.
These changes are particularly relevant for students and institutions involved in international mobility and exchange programmes.
The updated Student Route rules provide additional flexibility for Erasmus+ participants.
For example, qualifying Erasmus+ programmes may be eligible under the Student Route even where the course does not lead to an approved qualification in the usual way.
The rules also make provisions for certain lower-level courses and work placements connected with Erasmus+ programmes. In some cases, work placements forming part of an Erasmus+ programme will be exempt from the usual duration restrictions.
This is intended to make the UK’s immigration system compatible with the country’s return to the Erasmus+ framework.

The changes will not all come into force on the same date.

Students should also remember that meeting the financial requirement is only one part of a Student visa application. Applicants must satisfy all applicable requirements, including those relating to their course, institution, Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), English-language ability where required, and other immigration conditions.
UK immigration rules can change regularly, and applying based on outdated information can create unnecessary problems.
